  18. ===== [1] About ShowPages
  19.  
  20.   ShowPages is a small utility for downloading PostScript code and
  21.   printing ASCII text file to your PS printer. The main features are:
  22.  
  23.     1. You can download PS code in the background (Using PrintMonitor)
  24.     2. You can print your documents simply by drag & drop.
  25.     3. It treats text whose first 2 bytes are '%!' as postscript code,
  26.        otherwise as plain text.

  33.   Changes from MacLPR 1.3.2
  34.     1. The name was changed from 'MacLPR' to 'ShowPages'.

  43.  
  44.   Simply drag & drop your text file.  Press option-key while
  45.   launching, the page setup dialog will be appeared.

  49.     
  50.   Followings are all of the menu items of ShowPages.
  51.    File
  52.      Print / Print Clipboard / Page Setup / Quit
  53.    Edit
  54.      Undo / Cut / Copy / Paste/ Clear
  55.   Except for 'Undo', you can use Edit menu items in Edit box in the
  56.   dialog (Sys7 or later).

  58.   Followings are description about menu of MacLPR:
  59.  
  60.   [Print...]
  61.    You can print PS file or plain ASCII file, by selecting the file
  62.    and clicking open button.
  63.  
  64.   [Print Clipboard...]
  65.    You can print the contents of Clipboard (with TEXT data).
  66.     
  67.   [Page Setup...]
  68.    Page Setup Dialog will be appeared.  Following buttons are added
  69.    to Standard Print Style Dialog box:
  70.    (Even if you keep pressing option key while drag & drop
  71.    launching, this dialog box will be appeared)

  73.       1. Show Print Dialog
  74.           The Print Job dialog will be appeared when printing.  Please
  75.           check this option as you want to get 2 or more copies of
  76.           same file.
  77.       2. Add 'Showpage' to PS file
  78.           Add 'showpage' operator to the end of the PS file.  For
  79.           example, please check this option, when you want to print
  80.           EPS files generated by Adobe Illustrator.
  81.       3. BBFig Support
  82.           This is options for calculating the bounding box of
  83.           Postscript figure.  When you need this option, check 'BBFig
  84.           support' and then select 'BBox' or 'Grid'.  
  85.  
  86.           * BBox: The dashed rectangle which encloses the Postscript
  87.           figure and the coordinate of the rectangle will be printed.
  88.           * Grid: The grid and coordinate axis (like section paper)
  89.           will be printed.

  91.           You may prefer 'BBox' rather than 'Grid'.  But sometimes
  92.           'BBox' calculation fails, especially in case of including
  93.           bitmap image in PS code.  Then you must choose 'Grid' and
  94.           read the coordinate with your eyes.

  96.           If you never need this option, please delete 'TEXT' resource
  97.           ID=131, 132 with ResEdit.  Then the 'BBFig Support' check
  98.           box will be disabled.

  100.       4. Plain Text Layout
  101.           Setup for plain text printing.  Decide which you prefer, one
  102.           column or two columns.
  103.       5. Plain Text Font
  104.           Setup the font face and size for printing plain text.
  105.       6. Long Lines are
  106.           Select the operation for too long lines in plain text file.
  107.           * Truncated: the long lines are truncated at the right edge
  108.               of the page.
  109.           * Wrapped around: long lines are wrapped around to next line.

  111.       7. Header & Footer...
  112.           Make setting of header, footer and border line.  In the
  113.           string of Header & footer, you can use following 'special
  114.           string'.

  116.             [fname]    file name
  117.             [page]    number of page
  118.             [cdate]    File creation date
  119.             [ctime]    File creation time
  120.             [mdate]    File modification date
  121.             [mtime]    File modification time
  122.             [date]    Current date
  123.             [time]    Current time
  124.             [user]    User name (defined in Shared Setup cdev)
  125.                      (Under System 6.0x, defined in Chooser)
  126.             [mac]    Machine name (defined in Shared Setup cdev)
  127.                      (Unusable under System 6.0x)
  128.             [-]    Horizontally extentable space. Similar to \hfill of TeX.

  130.           You can input these special strings from the pencils icon
  131.           on the upper right corner of this dialog.  Of course, you can
  132.           type directory from keyboard.

  134.           (example)
  135.             "[-]=[page]=[-]"
  136.               centering page number between "=" symbols. Like =1=.
  137.             "[fname][-][user]@[mac]"
  138.               The File name at left side and user name and machine
  139.               name at right side.

  141.   The settings in 1-5 are written in application file of MacLPR and
  142.   will be retrieved when MacLPR is invoked at next time.

  144.   The options available on Standard PrintStyleDialog and
  145.   PrintJobDialog are invalid in MacLPR except 'Paper Size', 'Paper
  146.   Orientation' and 'Page Copies'.

  149. ===== [5] Note
  150.  
  151.    It uses PicComments for sending postscript code, so you should not
  152.    send code which include some operator like 'exitserver' or
  153.    'initgraphics'... (see Apple's tech note #91).  I think almost all
  154.    postscript codes of PICTURE are OK.
  155.  
  156.    The BBox function, which calculates bounding box of PS figure,
  157.    depends on Bernie Cosell's 'bb.ps'.  'bb.ps' is included 'bbfig
  158.    rev1.14' archive, you can find it on anonymous ftp site as
  159.    bbfig.1.14.shar.  If you have some problems or questions about this
  160.    function, please send Mr.Cosell also.  His e-mail address is

  165.  
  166.   Q. Why my Postscript figure is shifted toward one corner of the page?
  167.   A. Please select correct paper size in Page Setup dialog.  Hold
  168.      option key when drag & drop launching, the Page Setup dialog will
  169.      be appeared.
  170.     
  171.   Q. How can I send my Postscript code to unix lpd?
  172.   A. You cannot.  The previous name 'MacLPR' might cause this
  173.      misunderstanding.  To do this, you need CAP on your UNIX host or
  174.      info-mac:util/lpr-12.hqx on your Mac.
  175.  
  176.   Q. I want to edit header string/ want to change the size of header/
  177.      want to disappear the border line.
  178.   A. Now you can do with this new version!
